Losing a pet is always hard. They're like your babies, that you grow up and nurture and give a good life to. You should never feel like your grief is unwarranted. A life is a life, no matter what species it is.
He sounded like he had a long and wonderful life, you should feel proud that you had such a lovely pet as part of your family. :) Hopefully time will heal you.
